A bit of a backwards one this time, leading from the cover to the original. Alanis covered her own songs and My Humps, this time she's covering Seal's Crazy
Alanis
This version was recorded for the recent movie The Devil Wears Prada.
It is slightly rockier than the original, featuring more use of distorted electric guitars. In fact, distortion isn't the only effect, no are they only used on the guitars. From my first hearing of this version, all I could hear was all the added effects. Listen to Alanis' voice and you should hear noticeable delays, reverbs and modulation.
Oddly enough for Alanis, the vocal embellishments sound weak.
In the second chorus, you can hear megaphone-type distortion and eq applied heavily to the vocals. Even the guitars are heavily processed guitar.
The durms are mixed loud, with a repetitive loop
Seal
This, the original version of the song is more atmospheric, more relaxed. It has a slower rhythmic start and instead of the distorted guitars using in Alanis' version, this uses a synth for the phased pad.
The drums sound more electronic but that was right for the year in which it was recorded. However, even by today's standards they are not overly obtrusive and stand out less than that in Alanis' version.
The whole song feels to be at the same dynamic level, there are fewer dynamics between verse and chorus. As such, it could be used well as background music (and for once that's not an insult).
Overall, it's relied more on the vocalist's ability than the introduction of effects.
