George Michael
Iconic in the extreme. How many parodies of this video have there been? It must be one of the most recognisable videos ever and the guitar riff follows being easily recognisable even without the vocals.
There's a pulsating rhythm generated by just the guitar, very little volume to the drums, mainly just something very simple to keep the beat plus a tambourine to jog it along. George Michael's lead vocal is accompanied by a few backing vocals towards the ends of lines and there's a cut to a thin electric guitar solo.
Limp Bizkit
This particular version of the cover is awful. I keep reading how people like Limp Bizkit's cover, is there a better recording or a better, more studio version of it? However I think it's the main version. Sadly.
It's covered in LB's usual style of heavy guitars, heavy drums, heavy bass and shouting vocals, with some melodic vocals and quieter parts during the verses. It just doesn't work, the vocals are screamed out of tune and the heaviness of the production just results in a mush.
It's a shame, I like LB's music and I think they do what they do well. I especially like the guitar work of Wes Borland. But on this particular song, give it a rest .They've released some good songs and even some good covers, but this wasn't one of them. Look at the video though and the fans enjoyed it. That must count for something.
