In the previous Cover Trail page, Fergie covered Barracuda. In this we'll use My Humps
Black-Eyed Peas
My Humps is a dance song, starting with vocals over a simple hip hop rhythm, almost as the character that Fergie's playing (assuming it's not herself) is answering questions - "What you gonna do with all that junk inside that trunk?"
There's very little melodic content beyond the notes in Fergie's vocal line. There are a couple of synths that enter and exit at various points. The vocals sound clipped, like Fergie's not getting chance to breath in time for her lines. Some of that is probably aimed for since the song is a conversation, so the vocals are more like speech than singing. The song works because of the beat and the vocal hooks.
Alanis Morissette
What a difference. This is a much slower version, giving the vocals time to develop and shine through. Alanis has dramatically changed the style ensuring that she can sing notes rather than having to speak them. The main accompaniment is a piano; simple, sparse, almost haunting, but it works.
In this version of the song, there's a single vocalist, Alanis sings the questions and answers herself.
Personally, I don't like the video. Ok it's a parody, obviously. It's funny once (very funny in face), perhaps twice, but the effect soon wears off. Despite that, the cover version remains a good song long after the video novelty has worn off. As a piece of publicity, it's great. Over 11 million views and I know I'm not the first person to compare the two. It's easy to find others. In this case, this cover serves as a link to the next cover.
