Rollin' - Limp Bizkit and Robbie Williams

Limp Bizkit covered Faith, but Robbie covered Rollin'. Even performed it live.

Limp Bizkit

This is the song that brought Limp Bizkit to my attention. It's got cleaner rhythm than a lot of their other stuff. I'm referring to how the band play together. Often a riff on guitar doesn't work well when also played on the bass. In this song, LB have found a combination that works for them. Bring the in-your-face style vocals high in the mix along with scratches, splashy drums with an earthy kick and this is the essential Limp Bizkit track. Pay attention to Wes Borland's guitar, it doesn't follow the expected chords even in the chorus. It's not difficult to play on guitar, just takes a bit to get your head round what the guitar's doing in relation to the drums and vocals. It's almost playing a different rhythm, but together it works.

The original is a good pumping soundtrack to whatever you're doing at that time.

Robbie

I don't know where to start with this. It's bad....no that's not sufficient...It's live...maybe...Ok, let's dive in.

It's a live version, so the quality of the recording and especially the mixing has to be taken into consideration. It just doesn't sound right. Robbie can perform a variety of styles, I'd never have thought him trying something like this, but I guess he's got the talent for it. But the clip doesn't work.

The backing vocals are the loudest thing on stage, making Robbie's vocals sound weak in comparison. He's clear though, you can hear every word unlike the LB original.

Maybe Robbie just sounds weedy, but his voice doesn't sound right to me for this song. As I listen to it again, I've just noticed what's missing; it's the distorted guitars that drove the original.

I think it was played too fast for the style of the cover, if it had been played slower, then the cleaner guitars would have worked.
